English Dub Review: Full Dive: This Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life! “A Fairy’s Power”

Overview:

Hiro visits a counselor to try and get some help. A nun dumps water on him to “cleanse” him. The bullying is even overlooked by his instructor. Eventually, they bully Cathy into not associating with him. Luckily, Reona finally does something useful and turns everyone against Granada.

Our Take:

When even the counselor you go to for help tells you to quit and treats you like shit it might be time to leave. Hiro went to a nun for help and all she did was dump some water on him. I felt really bad for Hiro this episode, I know it’s practically a joke at this point but damn. Cathy gave in to the bullying and stopped associating with Hiro, Reona even joined in laughing at his misery. This was a hard episode to watch for me.

I dealt with bullying and I’m sure we all have at some point so it’s hard not to relate. Luckily by the end of the episode, it seems like things are finally going Hiro’s way but even that doesn’t feel right. He didn’t do anything or earn it in any way. Reona essentially just silently bullied the bullies. She pulled off subtle pranks and while yes it was nice to see them get what was coming to them it would have been nice if Hiro would have played more of an active role.

I think the person I might feel the sorriest for is Johnny Yong Bosch. I have to think he doesn’t even enjoy voicing this character. For what it’s worth he puts in a good performance with what he is given. I’ve always enjoyed listening to him voice characters but this might be the first time I felt bad. Not since Renton Thurston in Eureka Seven has he played someone as whiney. At least in that Renton grew throughout forty-nine episodes. I don’t think Hiro will have the same chance in this.

We get a tease that next week Reona will say why she is so keen on Hiro beating the game. Maybe she will explain why she would marry him if he does. Reona is not the greatest person but I would beat a game to marry her, something tells me her reasons are terrible though. Guess we will find out next week, here’s hoping things pick up in the next couple of episodes.
