English Dub Review: Pretty Boy Detective Club Episodes 5 & 6

Overview

The Swindler, the Vanishing Man, and the Pretty Boys (Part 2)

Mayumi is right in the middle of “enemy territory” and comes to the realization that the pretty silver-haired boy Nagahiro is being cheated out of his chips. Swindled, really. Of course, Mayumi’s eagle eyes are able to pick up on the hidden underlings helping the titular swindler. Yet not all is lost, at least not yet…

The Pretty Boy in the Attic: (Part 1)

Mayumi decides not to be partaking in the club any longer, as she attempts to duck out a mandatory meeting, but it doesn’t go well as she’s promptly dragged to the club room, where she finds the “urgent business” that she was summoned for…

Our Take

For Episode 5, I thought it was rather strange that the confrontation itself was brushed over in favor of an epilogue. However, with it being clear that this is just the beginning of their conflicts with Lai, I gotta say it played with expectations a bit. But It would’ve been nice if they showed how the case ended instead of just telling us how it ended.

As for Episode 6, it had a lot more slapstick and accessible humour than past ones. And I like that they are mixing up the tone a bit, as it keeps things fresh. Quite a few compelling hypotheses they all come up with in this episode about those 33 paintings. Also, Fudatsuki is still lurking around…

Overall both were ok episodes, but much like the past ones, the artstyle and visuals excel the most in terms of aesthetics and presentation, while the story can be a bit all over the place yet fun with its proceedings.
