Review: The Movie Show Does Romance
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Love is in the air in this week’s episode as Deb has some choice words to say about the post-apocalyptic comedy Love and Monsters. Afterward, Deb’s hairy ex-boyfriend shows up and moves in on Wade’s mother. Plus, they discuss their thoughts on the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as well as one of Wade’s favorite movies, Transformers. Also, the hosts interview the famous uncle who has a habit of dying a lot, and they get an unexpected visit from the robots in disguise.
Our Take
It looks like we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day early with a romance-themed episode of The Movie Show. While the love aspect is present in only two segments, Love and Monsters and Transformers, the episode still has plenty of humorous gags to prevent me from dumping it. It had a familiar structure from the ghosts episode two weeks ago, but it looked like the creators behind it learned from their mistakes and tried to make the narrative funny. Now that’s progress. The humor here works well in poking fun of a specific movie genre, which, in this case, is romance. My top highlight in terms of the comedy would have to be the presence of Deb’s ex-boyfriend Robert Roberts, and yes, he’s a wolfman. Not only was it appropriate given the fact that they talked about Love and Monsters, but it was also hilariously endearing to watch. Whether it’s him trying desperately to win Deb back or unexpectedly winning the heart of Wade’s mother, every scene Robert’s in was a howling delight in my eyes. I also want to point out that I was surprised to see Wade’s mother as a human being since Wade is a puppet. That part raised so many questions in my brain. I also got a kick out of the Uncle Ben interview, which happened to cleverly spoof the trend that appeared in numerous Spider-Man projects, including the film adaptations. That guy seriously can’t catch a break these days. Thank goodness everything worked out well for him in the end. The Transformers segment fell short on the big laughs compared to the other bits I mentioned, but it was nice to hear Wade share my love with Michael Bay’s take on the robots in disguise. The story may not be as zany as the time-traveling episode from last week, but the episode’s romantic segments have enough qualities to make me want to schedule a second date with it.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
