Review: Gary And His Demons “Gary and His Vacation”

This one is called a “Fuck you, Tequila”.

Overall (Spoilers Below)

Gary and Hanley go to a beach town to kill a Fish Demon that’s causing trouble, but Gary can only think of one thing…VACATION! Yep, he actually kills the demon so quickly, Gary’s got time left to spare before he has to go back home and, as a result, opts to take in some beach. Unfortunately, Hanley gets scratched by the Fish Demon and becomes one himself so Gary has to cut his vacation short after he defeats the Fish Demoned-Hanley so that he can take his partner home to get fixed up. As luck would have it, Gary too, would get scratched by the Fish Demoned-Hanley, but of course, no one at HQ wants to help him out.

Our Take

By far, this week’s episode was the best well written of the show’s first season. The dialogue was hilarious, and the overall plot of the episode finally got us back on track in terms of demon killing. In fact, this was the first time we’ve seen Hanley in a while, and he was almost a sight for sore eyes, as he’s a great counterweight to the constant on-screen dominance that Gary conveys.

The fight scenes themselves were only ok, but I particularly liked the production of the surf sequences with Gary and Hanley. I wish the episode was a bit longer as I would’ve liked to have really bulk up the fact that Gary was having a good time, but having Hanley go nuts was fun as well, in either instance, a longer run time could have done this episode real well in stretching the plot out a bit so that the viewer can have a vested interest in Gary’s alone time while on vacation before Hanley turns. Really, these are small gripes, and at the end of the day we get a good catch.
