English Dub Review: Lupin the Third Part 4 “High School Undercover!”

Back in school…we are the leaders.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Lupin takes what he thinks is a precious crystal but during the hot pursuit loses it in some dude’s backpack heading to school. As a result, Lupin has to disguise himself as a teacher to go get it back from the other teachers who want to use the crystal as part of a bomb to get back at this dude that blackmailed them. Fortunately, Lupin is able to “fight” off the teacher and get the crystal back but not before helping the teachers get back at the guy blackmailing the teachers. Lupin decides to rid himself of the crystal after questioning its authenticity, but it isn’t long before someone else snatches it up.

Our Take

I kinda think Lupin pulled what “Alfred” was telling “Bruce Wayne” about in The Dark Knight, in that, perhaps Lupin didn’t want to steal this crystal for any monetary gain rather he just thought it was fun. In any event, this week’s episode was a ton of fun featuring a comical premise with twists and turns right up until the last frame. Lupin the Third is not only one of the better shows on Toonami, it might be the best international import on Adult Swim for 2017.

The aesthetic of the series is excellent, looking more inspired by Archie Comics rather than anything made in Japan and featuring solid voice acting lead by Tony Oliver (“Lupin”) that may sound hokie but adds to the charm of the franchise. This week’s episode of Lupin the Third may have taken place in a high school, but this show is all class.
