Review: Universal Basic Guys “Oedipus Flex”

Overview

Mark and Rhoda team up to beat the DelVecchios in a dance competition, while Tammy and Kardgen help out with an organ delivery.

Our Take

It’s rare we get a DelVecchios episode and it’s even more rare that we get an episode with Tammy’s co-worker Kardgen whom I actually don’t recall the last time seeing. Unfortunately, that’s largely where the originality ends this week as I couldn’t help but notice both plots having strong parallels to movies that have done almost identical premises.

Mark and Rhoda getting a suit that can help them dance? Saving Silverman did largely the same bit featuring Jason Biggs in the starring role. Tammy and Kardgen losing an organ on the way to a transplant? That’s been done quite a few times before as well, most prominent for me being the Mr. Bean scenes from the movie Rat Race. It’s not even like the premises didn’t just borrow from both of those movies, but in the case of the latter, it’s almost beat for beat.

Still though, I couldn’t help but find entertaining the climax with Mark and Rhoda’s competitive dance and the hilarious choreography that came with it. Furthermore, Tammy and Kardgen’s bit also had some rather funny moments as well.
