Review: Helluva Boss “A Trial of Errors/The Auction”

Things sure did happen in the first three episodes of season three, and I’m not just talking about I.M.P.’s workplace shenanigans.  With Stolas embracing his kinkiness with someone else, Blitzo has reached a new level of turmoil and regret, and that’s not even the worst part.  “A Trial of Errors” sees Blitzo decide to sue Wally Wackford (Don Darryl Rivera) for stealing the company’s name, even though he never filed it in the first place.  While it does result in some courtroom craziness and raunchy humor, the episode is more about Blitzo and Stolas working out their problems by admitting their real feelings about what they’ve been through.  This moment would’ve ended their complicated will-they-won’t-they situation, but boy, was I wrong.  This is evident in “The Auction”, where Blitzo and Stolas try to stop Stella from selling a locket that belonged to Stolas’ mother.  In the process, Stolas reunites with his first fling from college, Vassago (Harvey Guillén), and Blitzo gets slaughtered again by pain and jealousy.

Both episodes emphasized the complex “relationship” between Blitzo and Stolas through their guilt amid their episodic structures.  To their credit, they give both sides understandable reasons for their struggles, especially from Stolas’s perspective, with his own regrets and whom he wants to share his love with.  As for Blitzo, he’s still as arrogant, immature, and obnoxious as ever, but his struggles and growth keep him more interesting than irritating.  At the very least, I can tolerate Blitzo more than Stella, who most certainly deserves a punishment worse than death.  However, whether Blitzo’s jealousy ends up too derivative depends on the last two episodes of the season’s first part.  Otherwise, “A Trial of Errors” and “The Auction” both succeed in the show’s character study and LGBTQ+ relationship aspects amid its raunchy yet hilarious comedy and presentation, notably in the former’s reconciliation between Blitzo and Stolas.
