English Dub Review: Reincarnated as a Sword “The Floating Island”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Fran and Teacher join forces with a benevolent necromancer to conquer a dungeon on a floating island.

Our Take:

Four years ago, we were introduced to a new isekai hero unlike anyone we’ve seen before: a talking sword with OP abilities.  Together with his catgirl apprentice, Fran, they became the world’s strongest underdog duo ever to grace the new world.  It also delivered a somewhat refreshing, entertaining take on the overused isekai genre, thanks to the characters’ chemistry and charming humor.  Four years after its cliffhanger ending, we finally get to see them embark on a new quest, though it’s not without a sudden detour.

The season one finale concluded with Fran and Teacher crash-landing into a building and encountering a necromancer named Jean du Vix.  “The Floating Island” picks up where it left off, with the duo and Jet discovering that Jean isn’t like the other necromancers.  He’s actually a less threatening version of the traditional enemy, and Jean seeks help from Fran and Teacher to clear a dungeon on a floating island.  This clearly marks the start of an arc in which Fran and Teacher explore and defeat enemies in the floating island’s dungeon.  However, it also raises a few new questions that could play a role in the second season, including a nameless boy subjected to dangerous experiments by a mysterious organization.

“The Floating Island” brings viewers back into the oddball world of Reincarnated as a Sword, and the result is pretty much what we’d expect, now with hard rock theme songs.  Like season one, season two mixes lightheartedness, goofy humor, and action, with the latter coming from the characters’ battle against the island’s skeleton guardians.  While it may not work for everyone, I still got plenty of laughs from Fran and Teacher’s chemistry, and Jean du Vix is a fine addition to the cast, thanks to Cole Feuchter’s respectable performance.  The question now is whether it keeps this momentum going with a dungeon full of the undead.
