English Dub Review: You and I Are Polar Opposites “Christmas Eve”
Overview:
Tani reflects on when he began to develop feelings for Suzuki. The group meets up during the Spring to catch up.
Our Take(Spoilers):
This ending was about as bittersweet as they come. It makes sense that it would be like that because of the subject matter. Students graduating and moving on to college is often portrayed as a bittersweet time in their lives. They’re happy to be moving on from high school but sad to leave their friends and significant others behind. As we all know, high school relationships don’t typically last, so that lends those feelings to us, the viewers, as well.
The majority of the episode is a flashback that shows how Tani started to get feelings for Suzuki. I have to admit that it was a bit disappointing for this to be the focus of the episode. I wanted to see what happened to everyone after they went off to college. We still got that, but it was more of a montage because of the time crunch for the episode.
If, like me, you were heavily invested in the relationship between Taira and Azuma, then I think you’re going to be both happy and sad. We see them hanging out in college; Azuma picks Taira up in her car, and you can assume they’re together if you want; I certainly did. It wasn’t talked about or confirmed by anyone once the group got together, but when you think about it, that kind of fits the two of them. Taira and Azuma are pretty private and wouldn’t make a huge deal of their relationship, whether they were together or not.
One area of concern was Nishi and Yamada. When everyone got together for a picnic, it seemed like everyone was there, with one notable exception. Nishi was nowhere to be found! Now, that could just mean she wasn’t able to make it or something like that, but it did make me raise my eyebrows a bit. Yamada and Nishi are the exact opposite of the previous couple I was discussing, so I imagine if they broke up, it would have been talked about.
This wasn’t just a season finale; it was the series finale. You and I Are Polar Opposites is one of the best rom-coms I’ve seen in a long time. If you liked this, I’ve heard that the author’s other work, The Ramparts of Ice, is good as well. I loved this show so much, and I’m definitely going to miss it, so I think I might check it out as well. I’m looking forward to my season review, but much like the theme of this episode, it’s going to be bittersweet.
