English Dub Review: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity “The End Two World”

Overview:

Ichigo, with his Bankai broken and his Zanpakuto shattered, sinks into the depths of despair.

Our Take(Spoilers):

I can’t believe I’m just now mentioning this, but have you ever really looked at Yhwach’s moustache? It looks like it’s growing out of his nose; later on, I got confirmation that it isn’t, but it definitely looks like it. I’m a history nerd who loves to study the Civil War, so I love that he’s representing that era of facial hair. I’m just glad it’s not actually growing from his nose cause that would be weird. If you want to watch an anime where someone does have a moustache from their nose, check out Basilisk; be warned, it’s depressing as hell, though.

Sorry about that little tangent. It became so noticeable that I couldn’t help but say something about it. I still love this show, but as you might have noticed, I am starting to get a little… bored? I love a fight that lasts a long time as much as the next guy, but it’s starting to reach a point where it feels like the heroes are getting shit on at all times. A good fight has ebbs and flows where both sides have times when they’re on top, but Yhwach has been beating these kids like they stole something for the last twenty episodes; it feels like.

There’s one trope I really love, and that’s when a bad guy eventually becomes a good guy, or works with the good guys at the very least. I can’t think of a series that does this better than Dragonball; they did it with Vegeta and, to an extent, Frieza. One got full redemption, while the other just helped once. I bring this up because it was cool to see Aizen help fight Yhwach, but once again it leads to the boredom issue.

When a character who was once the biggest and baddest villain of the series can’t even make a dent in the new bad guy, it starts to make you wonder. I think what is most concerning about the fighting being so one-sided is that when the good guys eventually succeed and win, it will feel unearned. I’m fully expecting there to be a power that Ichigo pulls out of his ass at the eleventh hour to win. I hope that I’m wrong, but it’s really starting to seem like we’re headed that way.
