English Dub Review: The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life “The enhanced clothes I was wearing were destroyed by a devastating blow, and a traumatized girl in casual clothes hit me with all her might.”
Overview:
With help from legendary adventurer Lily Flambert, Rein defeats a mid-level dragon.
Our Take(Spoilers):
This show might be my surprise hit of the season. It is legitimately one of the funnier shows I’ve watched recently. But I need to give a bit of a disclaimer: shows like this often seem more geared towards younger people, but that couldn’t be further from the truth with this show. This anime doesn’t shy away from violence. We saw someone’s head pop off after being hit with an arrow, for example. That’s not all; some of the dialogue is pretty suggestive as well. When Rein and Lily encounter Rein’s shitty old guild, one of the guys says to Lily that he would like to bury something inside her. There’s suggestive dialogue, and then there’s that. I have a feeling this show isn’t going to be all happy-go-lucky as I thought.
Speaking of Lily, she’s an early front-runner for best girl, and something tells me she’s going to run away with it if the ED is anything to go by. I’m hoping we get to see a crush between her and Rein develop, but that’s my own personal wish. With Rein’s help, I think she’ll be able to conquer her fears and be able to be a top-class adventurer again. But first, there’s a new character we’re introduced to at the end of the episode who seems to have some business with her.
That’s not the only trouble brewing in the world, though. Rein’s old guild now knows that he dispelled his enchantments, and they’re not happy about it. With his current guild being on the smaller side, I could definitely see them being threatened by the biggest guild around, but hopefully that isn’t something that’s hanging around for long. Trust me, I want a little more lighthearted stuff, but with how Rein’s old guild treats people, I don’t know if I’m going to get that wish.
One wish I did have granted was for the animation to stay strong so far. We’re only two episodes in, but this is one of the better animated shows I’ve seen in a long time. From the silly facial expressions to the action scenes, everything is given a lot of care and attention to detail. I was a little meh about this show when I read the title when I was assigned this show, but I’m very excited to see where this goes. One of my only nitpicks is that Rein is dumb as hell; I hope he gets a little smarter sometime soon.
