English Dub Review: One Piece: Heroines “Episode: Nami”

Overview:

After failing to stop the thieves due to ill-fitting shoes, Nami storms into the shop where she bought them for a refund. However, the head designer offers to make her a new pair from scratch on one condition: she must walk in their upcoming fashion show.

Our Take:

I have a little bit of experience with One Piece. I watched almost 200 episodes, so I’ve barely scratched the surface, but I know enough to say this was awesome. If you don’t know what One Piece: Heroines is about, let me break it down.

Essentially, One Piece: Heroines is a (currently) one-episode special that’s focused on one of the heroines of the story. In this case, it’s Nami, though she does get a fair bit of help from Nico Robin as well. While doing the research for this, I was admittedly a bit disappointed that this has only one episode since July. From what I can tell from One Piece fans, we should be happy this got an English dub at all, but I’m a bit sad we don’t know if we’re getting more because this was such a fun episode; I think I might dive back into One Piece. You hear that, Jayson?! Are you happy now?!

I want to talk about the animation because if you’re used to watching the main series, then this episode might be a bit jarring in the best way possible. I’m wondering if this is what the upcoming remake will look like, and if so, then I’m on board! This show was beautiful to watch and was somehow more realistic to me than the main series. The original show has a nostalgic look that I can’t hate on at all, but I do like what they did here.

Nami purchases some shoes that broke while she was in the middle of a fight from a company that boasts shoes that are good in a fight. Nami was understandably upset that they caused her to lose her treasure. What follows is a journey with a shoemaker named Miucha that was honestly beautiful to watch. When a show manages to make you feel something, then no matter what, it’s succeeded to me.

I don’t want to spoil too much, other than you should watch this episode. Even if you’ve never seen One Piece, I think you’d be okay. As long as you know who Nami and Nico Robin are, I think you’re good. This episode gave me goosebumps and such good feelings that I want to go back to the original series and see if I can find more of those vibes in there.
