English Dub Review: The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life “Everyone knows what it’s like when nothing goes right, but what do I do when that happens? Why, it’s obvious! I run and scream my head off!”
Overview:
Rein is unceremoniously kicked out of the Beast’s Fangs, so he decides to become an adventurer.
Our Take(Spoilers):
This show could be great, at least based on the first episode. The opening of this episode suggests it’s going to be a samey revenge story. Rein isn’t your typical adventurer and is only able to enchant items. Once he has finally enchanted everyone’s item in his guild, they realize they don’t need him anymore and fire him. This would usually be the point where he finds a new wrinkle in his ability and goes down a path of revenge or something. Since this show is leaning hard into comedy, instead it goes in a different direction.
While Rein’s ability does have a wrinkle to it, it’s not new to the character, as it turns out. He can take the enchantments away at any time, and they are on a point system. He can then assign them to anything and pump them all into his dagger and clothes. This essentially turns his clothes into steel armor and his dagger into a weapon of mass destruction. I still have questions about how his powers work, but it’s only the first episode, and there’s room to grow.
Comedy in anime can be very hit or miss. There are only a few times I can recall laughing out loud during an anime. Lovely Complex and a specific scene in Angel Beats stand out for me personally. But this show might change all of that because there were a couple of times I couldn’t help but laugh. I was surprisingly in the mood for something a bit more edgy but was pleasantly surprised by how fun this was. My only complaint is that there are times for levity and times for seriousness, but something tells me there won’t be any serious moments in this show.
I was also excited to hear Justin Briner as a lead in a new show. The character of Rein is going to be a lot of fun, it seems, and Justin might be the reason why. Rein seems to be very interested in trying out his enchanted equipment, even if it makes him sound like a masochist. Either way, I’m excited to hear Justin in something, and he once again shows his talent by showing the range of his voice. Sure, Rein is closer to the Deku range than when he plays someone like Ayanokoji, but they still sound different to me.
