English Dub Review: The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten “An Important Promise With the Angel”

Overview

Amane worries about taking responsibility before he and Mahiru start a more intimate relationship.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten continues to focus on Amane and Mahiru growing closer during their sleepover. Their shared bath gives them another opportunity to open up about their feelings, while Mahiru finally gets to show off the black bikini Chitose encouraged her to buy. Their chemistry is still undeniably sweet, and the episode does a good job showing how comfortable they have become with each other without rushing their relationship.

The episode also gives us some welcome time with Amane’s parents, particularly his father, who offers some thoughtful advice about his son’s future. Their conversation reinforces just how supportive Amane’s parents are while giving Amane something to consider as he becomes more independent. It is a nice change of pace from the usual romance-heavy material and adds some substance to an otherwise straightforward episode.

Overall, this was a decent episode, but the repetitive nature of the romance is becoming a legitimate problem. The constant cuddling, kissing, declarations of affection, and hesitation have started to feel less like natural progression and more like the series hitting the same button every week. There is nothing wrong with a slow, wholesome romance, but slow does not have to mean stagnant. Amane and Mahiru are still likable enough to carry these moments, yet the lack of meaningful development is making the season feel increasingly stretched thin. With only two episodes left after this one, hopefully the series can shake things up and give the season a stronger finish.
