English Dub Review: Blue Box “Chinatsu Senpai”

The first episode of Blue Box is an entertaining and promising introduction to a romantic sports series that combines sports, school life, and a slow-burning love story. The episode takes its time establishing Taiki Inomata and Chinatsu Kano, while also showing their dedication to their respective sports.

The story follows Taiki, a high school badminton player who regularly arrives at the gym early in the morning to practice. However, he is always beaten there by Chinatsu, a talented basketball player and one of the school’s most popular students. Taiki likes Chinatsu, but he is too shy to tell her that. Their early interactions are awkward but cute. Things get more interesting when Chinatsu begins to show that she is more aware of Taiki than he initially realizes.

The episode also does a good job of establishing Taiki’s personality and his attitude toward badminton. He is not presented as an exceptionally gifted athlete from the beginning. Instead, he is someone who genuinely enjoys his sport and wants to improve through hard work. His admiration for Chinatsu comes from a similar place. He remembers seeing her continue practicing basketball after a disappointing defeat and being inspired by how seriously she took her goals.

Chinatsu is also given enough depth to make her more than just Taiki’s love interest. She is ambitious, hardworking, and determined to reach Nationals with her basketball team.

The biggest surprise comes toward the end of the episode when Taiki discovers that Chinatsu will be staying with his family while her parents are overseas. It looks like a familiar romantic setup, but it creates an interesting situation for the two characters and gives the series plenty of opportunities to explore their relationship.

Overall, the first episode of Blue Box is an entertaining start to the series. The sports elements are handled well, while the developing relationship between Taiki and Chinatsu gives the story its emotional appeal. The episode does not rush their connection, which makes their interactions feel more natural. With its likeable characters, pleasant atmosphere, and promising romantic setup, Blue Box gets off to a strong start.
