Review: Futurama “Lord Nibbler in the Nothingverse”

Our Take
After taking a backseat for much of the Hulu-era run, everyone’s favorite dark-matter-pooping, universe-saving pet finally gets his day in the sun—and it brings back the exact brand of high-concept existential dread and classic Futurama heart fans have been itching for. I would say every season of Futurama you can always count on one Lord Nibbler-focused episode. Why? The character earns. He’s featured in all of the merch and whatever else this series licenses and therefore he is this show’s equivalent to Mr. Poopybutthole.
The episode strikes a great balance between Nibbler’s high-stature, booming-voiced Nibblonian form and his mindless, adorable “pet” persona but while typically known for balancing absurd sci-fi slapstick with surprisingly heavy emotional beats, the episode posed a harrowing premise: Nibbler was chosen for a solemn, one-way suicide mission to act as the final observer of a dying universe before it ceases to exist.
Nibbler realized that he didn’t need to witness an entire universe end to find cosmic meaning. His existence already held ultimate purpose simply because he was loved and cared for by Leela. The episode delivered a classic Futurama blend of sci-fi philosophy and heart, reaffirming the emotional core that has anchored Nibbler and Leela’s bond since the show’s earliest seasons.
