English Dub Review: The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten “Culture Festival, Day One”
Overview
Mahiru and Amane get a lot of attention dressed up for their maid and butler cafe during the school festival.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten heads into the school’s cultural festival, giving Amane and Mahiru plenty of opportunities for cute and comedic moments. The maid-and-butler café makes for some fun interactions, especially seeing the two dressed for the occasion and dealing with the attention they receive from their classmates. The episode also mixes in some lighter comedy and a few more serious moments to keep things from becoming too one-note.
The animation remains decent, with the character designs continue to consistently look good and fitting the series’ relaxed slice-of-life atmosphere. However, the biggest issue is how repetitive the romance has become. Amane and Mahiru are certainly cute together, but the constant compliments, jealousy, and reassurance between them are starting to feel like variations of the same conversation. The relationship could really benefit from some meaningful development to prevent the season from feeling stagnant.
Overall, this was a pleasant but fairly uneventful episode. The cultural festival provides a nice change of scenery and there are enough cute and funny moments to make it enjoyable, but the lack of progression is becoming increasingly noticeable. The first season had a stronger sense of growth between Amane and Mahiru, while this season has leaned much more heavily into their established relationship. Hopefully, the remaining episodes can introduce some new dynamics and give the romance a little more momentum.
