English Dub Review: Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia “The Steppe, Ever Unchanging”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

After Sorghaghtani turns down a political marriage, Sitara continues her search for Toregene’s whereabouts.

Our Take: 

Boraqchin surely made fools out of us with her secretive plot.  However, that plan of hers has suddenly come to a halt when Sorghaghtani refuses her marriage to Guyuk.  What she’ll do next is anyone’s guess, but the season finale instead focuses on the aftermath of this shocking refusal.  The first part of the aftermath is the search for Toregene, who’s weighed down by the guilt of being part of Boraqchin’s strategy.  The other is Ogedei’s latest action, which may play a role in a possible second season, in which he’ll remake the Mongol Empire to satisfy Sitara and Toregene.  While noble in his strive, that still doesn’t change how the two feel about the Mongols’ actions.  It’s still nice to see that it’s not all black and white with some of the Mongols, making them as well-rounded as the protagonists, yet misguided through their deeds, notably Ogedei’s generosity.

With Sitara’s first phase of her revenge plan in the books, I would say that this has been a pleasant journey through this part of history.  As someone unfamiliar with the Mongol Empire, I was a bit concerned I wouldn’t be invested in its representation.  However, thanks to Science Saru and the show’s engrossing tale of knowledge and revenge, I was proven otherwise with a well-crafted and solidly written adaptation of A Witch’s Life in Mongol.  Of course, “The Steppe, Ever Unchanging” proved that further, with a worthy setup for a potential season two that benefited from Cristina Vee’s performance as Sitara, notably in Sitara’s conversation about the heavens with Ogedei.  That scene alone surely made my spine tingle with their different beliefs and its animation style.  With all this in mind, I’m very much looking forward to what comes next in Sitara’s journey.
