Matt Groening Teases ‘The Simpsons: Hit & Run’ Return at D23 2026; Movie Sequel Re-Titled

At Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, The Simpsons panel delivered major news for both gamers and moviegoers. Creator Matt Groening sent fans into a frenzy by teasing a long-awaited revival of the 2003 cult-classic video game The Simpsons: Hit & Run, while Disney Entertainment officially revealed the new title, release date, and first footage for the upcoming theatrical sequel.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run Revival Teased

During the panel Q&A, Groening was directly asked whether the beloved Grand Theft Auto-style open-world game would ever see a remake or sequel. Groening let slip what appeared to be an unannounced project:

“I think the original game is coming back in some form…”

Current showrunner Matt Selman immediately interjected with a quick “…or not,” attempting to walk back the comment. However, the exchange—and Selman’s playful attempt at damage control—strongly suggests a official remaster or remake is currently in development behind the scenes.

The slip comes on the heels of recent industry developments, including original developer Radical Entertainment resurfacing as New Radical Games earlier in 2026 with an explicit focus on modernizing classic titles.

The Simpsons Movie 2 Officially Titled ‘The New Simpsons Movie’

In addition to video game news, Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden took the stage—joined by Bart Simpson—to reveal new details for the long-gestating theatrical feature sequel. Now known as The New Simpsons Movie the feature is slated for release on September 3, 2027 (Labor Day Weekend)

Disney shared an early, rough-animation animatic showing Homer attending a Springfield Isotopes baseball game. The sequence devolves into classic slapstick chaos as Homer frantically chases a foul ball across the entire town of Springfield, causing escalating disaster along the way.

The September 2027 release window places the film 20 years after the original 2007 The Simpsons Movie, which grossed over $500 million worldwide.
