English Dub Review: Mushoku Tensei “A King-Class Water Mage”

Overview:

Fearful of losing more loved ones, Rudeus begs Roxy to teach him a more potent form of magic.

Our Take:

I was worried that after all this time defending Rudeus, I was going to have to find a way to defend some new thing. He was begging Roxy to do something in the middle of the school courtyard, and he even caused a scene. I was worried that he was propositioning a threesome in the middle of school in the middle of the day. Sylphie and Luke came because they heard someone was harassing a female student. Not a great start for Rudeus or Roxy; we know that Roxy wants to be taken seriously, and when she’s confused for a young student, I can see why she’s upset.

Rudeus also had to deal with an issue with Aisha. She was raising a plant monster in her room. It’s a treant that Rudeus has had some experience with and wants to protect his sister. When he refuses, that’s when Aisha goes on the offensive. She tells Rudeus that if he doesn’t let her keep the treant, she’ll tell Roxy and Sylphie about his “secret treasure”. He didn’t have to worry about that for long, though, because Roxy came by and told him that her village would often domesticate treants, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Even in the small moments, the animation for this show is fantastic, but when we get a big spectacle of magic on display, it shines. Rudeus wants to learn some higher magic in order to protect his family. Roxy teaches him and Sylphie a spell that brings down a lightning bolt. When they cast this spell, it’s one of the most beautiful animations I’ve seen recently.

I love the slow and peaceful moments, but I have to admit I’m feeling a distinct lack of Eris now. After how much we focused on her in the first two episodes, I thought we might do some back and forth. Of course, we got those episodes back to back, so maybe next week we will get an Eris episode again. I know it was probably a way to keep us up to date with what she’s doing so that we have her on our mind when she hopefully reunites with Rudeus. But I want to see more of her, and two episodes without her is more than enough.
