English Dub Review: Chainsmoker Cat “Everyone Around Me Are Weirdos”

Overview:

Yani lands a job assisting Saori Tatsuro, a risque manga artist. After Yani mistakenly burns her manuscript, an unexpected visit follows.

Our Take:

We’re getting into more of the ecchi side of things now, but there was still some grossness. Yani rescued a kid from a rushing river, and the way they animate her breath is… something. It’s hard not to get grossed out when you watch this show because it definitely gets nasty. But this episode was one of the first that had only a couple of gross moments and was followed by a bunch of ecchi moments. There were even a few that made no sense, but hey, this show follows anime rules like anything else.

Yani always gets into trouble because of her smoking. Whether it’s financial trouble from affording cigarettes or a cigarette burning a hole through a draft of a manga she’s working on. In the case of the manga, she was working with a porn manga author, Saori Tatsuro. To make up for burning the page, she has Yani model for her, giving her inspiration for her manga. They run into trouble when trying to gain inspiration for “public sex” in the restrooms, and police come and arrest them both.

As you would expect, this leads to some ecchi scenes, but the true ecchiness didn’t come till later. Yani starts working for what I think is supposed to be a Yakuza boss. Yani accidentally spills some strawberry milk on his head, and this leads to her bowing in forgiveness. He gets a peek down her shirt and apparently gets such a huge boner it lifts the table, and yes, this will become story relevant.

The Yakuza man seems to run a manga publication where people come to shoot him once a month or so. Yes, that’s the actual explanation, and no, it doesn’t make sense. Anyways, he was shot, and it seemed like he was going to die. That is, until Yani comes to visit him in the hospital and holds his hand. While holding his hand, it brushes against her boob, and he gets a giant boner, which restarts his heart or something.

This was one of the weirdest episodes of an anime I’ve seen in some time. But I much prefer an episode like this rather than one that focuses on all the gross shit they have been. I would like to see some romance come into the picture, but I don’t think this is that kind of show.
