English Dub Review: Grow Up Show: Sunflower Circus “I Just Can’t Bring Myself To Be Honest”

Overview:

The “Sunflower Circus” had a successful show in Toyokawa, but their earnings were seized by debt collectors.

Our Take(Spoilers):

This episode really elevated the comedy in the series. You could always tell it was meant to be funny, but this episode actually was funny, to me at least. This episode focused on Imari and Isuzu; Imari’s father was a magician, and Isuzu’s family were street performers. As funny as this episode was, it’s hard to get over how unrealistic some of it is. You mean to tell me that the parents of these children had no issues with a circus taking their children away for an undisclosed amount of time? Unrealistic or not, I’m glad that they ditched their kids because it made this show happen.

Typically for me, funny faces in anime aren’t one to make me laugh, but for some reason all of Mizuka’s faces in this episode were hilarious. It’s also funny how her plans keep going to shit, and she ends up having to participate in events far more than she wants to. But when her weakness is money, you can convince her to do just about anything. Even if that means getting in a box that explodes and teleports her to the top of a lifeguard shack.

Mizuka and Ouka have to be getting closer because they were just grunting at each other and were able to tell exactly what they were trying to say. Last episode we focused on Shizuku, and even she was funny in her limited screentime this episode. She was even joking about Ouka and Mizuka acting like a couple and was called on her relationship with Svetlana. If I had to guess, there will probably be some yuri stuff between them at the very least.

Mizuka is a bit of an enigma as a character because she seems like she doesn’t care one second by wasting money and not helping. But then a moment or two later, she helps Imari find her love of magic again. She helps Imari gather up the courage to mend the bridge between her and Isuzu as well. It seems like she’s more selfless than she would like to let on, but her dad sure did do a number on her. She dislikes her father so much that she finds it weird when she learns that Imari loved her dad. I’m loving this show, but I’m still waiting for a little more backstory when it comes to Mizuka and her father.
