English Dub Season Review: Oshi no Ko Season Three

Overview:

Satisfied with his investigation of Lala Lai Theatrical Company, Aquamarine “Aqua” Hoshino shifts his focus from revenge to career growth and becomes a regular on the variety show Dig Deep! Chase the Impawsible. With memories of his mother still lingering in his mind, Aqua cuts contact with Kana Arima, leaving her unable to enjoy the surging popularity of her idol group, B-Komachi.

Our Take(Spoilers):

So much happened in this season of Oshi no Ko that you could be forgiven for thinking it was a longer season. Most anime seasons are twelve episodes long, but this show never seems to stick to convention. Season one and three were both only eleven episodes long, but they each also had one episode that was an hour long, so it balances out. Meanwhile, season three had thirteen episodes, which is more than the norm. If I had to guess, I would say that the people in charge of the anime knew what points they wanted to stop for certain seasons and planned out the episode count that way.

Another unconventional thing Oshi no Ko did was in how it aired to us. Up until this season, it had been on HiDive in the US, but Crunchyroll got season three of the show. Sometimes this leads to the unfortunate circumstance of having to watch the same show on multiple services. With the bad blood between HiDive and Crunchyroll, I thought that was going to be the same here. But surprisingly, all three seasons are on both streaming services. I don’t know if it will be like that for the final season, but it’s a nice way to ease fans into a new service.

With the move to Crunchyroll, I was also worried that they might recast the characters. Luckily, that didn’t happen, and from what I could tell, everyone reprised their roles. Jack Stansbury voices Aqua, and he’s starting to blow up. I’ve been hearing him in more and more shows lately. The standout of the season was Alyssa Marek, who voices Ruby.

Alyssa has also been getting a lot of roles, and with the focus on Ruby this season, it’s no surprise we got more of her. She showed her talent as well because Ruby ran the gamut of emotions this season. She was insidious, secretive, vindictive, and then, after the revelations about her and Aqua’s past lives, she was happy and cheerful.

This was another fantastic season of Oshi no Ko, and I can’t wait for the final season. It will probably get split up into three parts like most other anime, but that’s neither here nor there. There’s no release date as of yet, but let’s hope we don’t have to wait long.
