English Dub Review: Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World “Murder Is a Habit”
Overview
Shortly after Subaru discovers Meili’s corpse, Beatrice finds a book with Meili’s name on it in the archive.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Re: ZERO delivers one of its most unsettling and psychologically intense episodes yet as Subaru continues unraveling the mystery surrounding Meili’s death and his own fractured state of mind. Through the Book of the Dead, the audience gains a deeper understanding of Meili’s tragic past, her connections to Elsa and Capella, and the emotional scars that shaped her life. At the same time, Subaru finds himself confronted by disturbing revelations that only deepen the uncertainty surrounding the events within the tower.
The rest of the proceedings excels at creating a constant sense of dread, with Subaru’s deteriorating mental state serving as the centerpiece. Meili’s presence lingers throughout the story, while characters such as Beatrice, Emilia, Shaula, and Ram add further tension as suspicions begin to mount. Combined with exceptional voice acting, chilling imagery, and some of the strongest direction of the season, the result is an episode that feels equal parts mystery, tragedy, and psychological horror.
Overall, this is another phenomenal installment of Re: ZERO that masterfully balances character drama with an increasingly complex mystery. The emotional weight of Meili’s story, Subaru’s growing internal struggle, and a powerful cliffhanger make for a gripping experience from beginning to end. With the cour finale approaching, the series continues building momentum while keeping many of its biggest answers carefully out of reach.
