English Dub Review: Witch Hat Atelier “The Misgivings Of The Knights Moralis”

Overview:

In the latest installment of Witch Hat Atelier, “The Misgivings Of The Knights Moralis,” things pick up following Agott and Coco’s encounter with the knights. Of course, this might just be the start of the story.

Our Take:

Things start out dark from the get-go with the Knights threatening to erase Coco’s memories of magic, once again reducing her to an Outsider. Between her lifelong dream of learning magic and this being her only chance of saving her mother, she can only beg for mercy in horror as Agott’s explanations fall on deaf ears. Fortunately, the other apprentice witches arrive in time to help.

The knights aren’t willing to listen to any explanations until Qifrey shows up with his water sword. Seeing that they are Qifrey’s apprentices, the leaders of the knights is willing to look the other way. Guess connections are even important for witches. Still, one can’t deny that Qifrey even makes water look intimidating.

Olruggio further puts them in their place by reminding them that “magic users” are meant to use their powers for the greater good, noting that the girls have been helping injured people while the Knights were distracted.

Of course, viewers soon see the importance of keeping order in the magic world when some of the humans demand that their witches use their powers to heal people, even when it’s risky. Especially when doctors apparently exist in the show’s universe.

Assuring viewers that things are going back to normal, viewers see the return of the chibis. From Qifrey, no less, who breathes a sigh of relief that they were able to talk down the knights. His chibi self also comes in handy when gently reminding Tetia that she and Richeh are behind their studies compared to Agott. At the very least, viewers get an explanation as to why the story rarely does anything with them.

However, things take a more serious turn when Qifrey takes note of a certain vial of ink. Viewers are treated to a macabre vision of the masked witch, the figure that has haunted Coco for years, slicing their hand, adding blood to the ink.

Qifrey takes Coco to Kalhn. What initially seems to be a bit of a breather at the shop takes a turn when a bright light mixes everything up. Tartah, the assistant in the magic stationer’s store, is dismayed when the potions are spilled, as his color-blindness keeps him from telling which is which, making things tense between him and Coco. He already teased some envy of the witches, revealing that he isn’t one. Given that the episode also teases more of the two’s relationship, one has to wonder what the story has in store for him.

Of course, the episode also teases at Qifrey’s true colors. Not to mention whatever is going on with that masked witch. Still, the episode does end on a tender moment between Coco and her white-haired teacher.
