English Dub Review: The Ramparts of Ice “Self-consciousness”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Minato realizes how Koyuki is always on his mind. Later, while hanging out at the new mall, the misunderstanding between the four friends deepens.
Our Take:
Koyuki and Minato have caught themselves in another awkward situation when they both arrive at the school’s vending stands. Fortunately for them, it’s not as painfully awkward as their previous encounters, as they’ve grown to understand each other. Well, except for the cockroach they encountered, but that was more on the humorous side of things. As Minato starts to accept starting as friends instead of forcing himself in, Koyuki is still gradually warming up to him while embracing her sense of belonging. However, that hasn’t stopped the misunderstandings from becoming an issue. Of course, there’s also the return of Igarashi, whom Koyuki is still avoiding because of the rumors, until they finally meet at the train station, and the real reason behind Koyuki’s avoiding him starts to blossom.
The episode offers a laidback, harmless outing involving Koyuki, Miki, and the guys at the new mall, which is a much-needed break from the drama in between. But I still can’t help but feel that sooner or later, their misunderstandings could land them in hot water. However, amidst the good times, it also further highlighted Koyuki’s background, particularly for her encounter with Igarashi. She not only had the courage to speak to him despite his attitude, but also revealed to Miki that she had avoided him because she thought her rejection hurt his feelings. It’s moments like this that underscore Koyuki’s development from a shy introvert searching for belonging to someone who opens herself to others. Its traditional execution may not be entirely special, but its blend of charm and heart continues to break the ice amid the show’s familiar premise.
