English Dub Review: Rent-a-Girlfriend “Long Time No Girlfriend”

Overview:

The Hawaiians’ trip is over, and Kazuya is left to deal with the aftermath.

Our Take:

One minor thing I have to get off my chest. Why would they show Sumi at the beginning of the episode, even though she’s not in it at all after that?! She’s one of the only good things in this show! Don’t make me think that we’re going to have a good episode and then never let us see her again. But they made up for it… kind of…

Yaemori isn’t in the story much, but when she is, it’s enjoyable. She’s the other good thing about this show. Mainly because she doesn’t have feelings for Kazuya and tells him and Chizuru the truth with brutal honesty. I was surprised by how accurate her assertions about the situation between the two were.

I did feel like I missed something, or a whole episode was skipped, because Kazuya and Chizuru went months without speaking. That seems hard to have happened after such a troublesome vacation. You mean to tell me that his grandmother or some other family member didn’t want to spend time with them to try to calm them down or something? Kazuya is so disheveled that it leads me to believe he hasn’t seen anyone or left the house in months, and that is also hard to believe. There’s no way Ruka wouldn’t take advantage of no Chizuru for three months.

Yaemori tells Chizuru things that I thought she didn’t know, and she didn’t look surprised. Yaemori even mentioned Kazuya’s feelings for Chizuru, which was surprising. I’m cautiously optimistic that the next episode might be interesting, but if this was anything to go by, I’m not going to get my hopes up. I can suspend belief with the best of them, but this episode made me have to push it to the limit.
