The Blue Man Group Goes to War: Duncan Jones Unveils First ‘Rogue Trooper’ Trailer

After years of development hell and a radical creative pivot, the first teaser for Rogue Trooper has finally arrived. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), this animated adaptation of the legendary 2000 AD comic strip dropped its first footage today, April 20, 2026, marking a significant milestone for fans of the “Genetic Infantryman.”

Produced by Rebellion and Liberty Films, the movie has been built entirely within Unreal Engine 5, and the trailer showcases a gritty, stylized aesthetic that bridges the gap between high-end gaming visuals and cinematic sci-fi.

A One-Man Platoon

For the uninitiated, Rogue Trooper follows Rogue (Aneurin Barnard), a blue-skinned soldier engineered to survive the poisonous atmosphere of Nu-Earth. But Rogue isn’t exactly a “lone” wolf. The trailer highlights the character’s most iconic gimmick: his fallen squadmates live on as bio-chips embedded in his gear.

  • Gunnar (Jack Lowden): His rifle, providing lethal precision and tactical commentary.

  • Helm (Daryl McCormack): His helmet, acting as the eyes and ears of the operation.

  • Bagman (Reece Shearsmith): His backpack, managing supplies and presumably offering dry wit.

The teaser offers a glimpse of the “Quartz Massacre,” the betrayal that left Rogue as the sole survivor of his unit, and sets the stage for his relentless hunt for the Traitor General.

The Unreal Advantage

The shift from live-action to a fully animated feature using Unreal Engine 5 appears to have paid off. The trailer leans into the “Nu-Earth” atmosphere—a toxic wasteland where the war between Norts and Southers has turned the planet into a literal hellscape.

An A-List Voice Gallery

While the teaser is brief, the sheer talent involved is staggering. In addition to Barnard and the bio-chip trio, the film features:

  • Hayley Atwell as Venus Bluegenes

  • Diane Morgan as Colonel Logan

  • Sean Bean, Matt Berry, Asa Butterfield, and Jemaine Clement in yet-to-be-disclosed roles.

  • In a classic bit of British wit, Ade Edmondson even has a cameo—as a pair of boots.

The Road to Nu-Earth

The movie is currently “coming soon-ish.” While a definitive release date wasn’t attached to the trailer, Rebellion has indicated that the film is “due for release later this year.” The production is reportedly heading to the Cannes Film Market next month to secure a major distribution partner.

For fans of Judge Dredd and the wider 2000 AD universe, Rogue Trooper represents a bold new chapter. Duncan Jones has been chasing this project since 2018, and if the teaser is any indication, he has finally captured the soul of the blue-skinned deserter.
