Review: Family Guy “Tall Stewie”

Overview:

Family Guy has come back from its break with two new episodes, one of which is “Tall Stewie.” Stewie and Brian try what life is like on the taller side with the help of some stilts. Meanwhile, Peter tries to see how desirable he is with a dating app.

Our Take:

The plot starts up when Peter’s pants rip during Church. When trying to get Peter a better fitting suit, an argument has Lois spell out that Peter is lucky to have her, since no other woman could possibly want him. Peter tries to prove her wrong with a dating app.

Of course, Lois is proven right when Peter’s profile doesn’t get any likes, not that he even uses his own photo or have anything interesting to say. Things take a turn when Peter discovers Lois is on the app herself. The story is effectively a flip of the episode, “Call Girl,” complete with a similar ending.

The titular storyline, with Brian and Stewie, arguably feels like it gets a little less focus. After Stewie comes home from a costume party dressed as Toy Story‘s Woody, complete with stilts, he realizes he likes the extra height, and the confidence that comes with it. Brian, however, gets jealous, and decides to beat him at his own game with some stilts of his own.

Honestly, one would think Stewie would use some sci-fi tech to turn this into an homage of King-Size Canary. Instead, Stewie and Brian’s rivalry is forgotten when they attract two women who invites them out on a few dates. Unfortunately, a beach date goes wrong when Stewie gets caught in the tide, and Brian has to expose his short king status to save him.

The women are less than impressed that their dates were a dog and a baby. It’s actually surprising to have someone finally comment that it’s strange to see human women attracted to a talking dog, but it’s probably even weirder that it’s never really happened before.

Alone together, Brian points out that elephant in the room: namely, Stewie, being a baby, will eventually grow up, but he’s stuck at his height, suggesting he was just jealous, allowing the story to end on a touching moment between the friends. Meanwhile, the two failed dates move onto a baby and a dog dressed in muscle suits, meaning that the universe is apparently filled with talking dogs and scheming babies.

One recurring joke is Meg trying to crack jokes over something bad happening to either Peter or Lois, only for them to tell her that she’s done for the day. Since she barely had a cameo in the last episode, one has to wonder if the writers really don’t know what to do with her or they’re cutting back on Mila Kunis as some sort of cost-cutting scheme.
