English Dub Review: Snowball Earth “The Savior Who Could Not Bring Salvation”
Overview:
In 2025 AD, after a sudden invasion of intergalactic kaiju, a painfully shy boy, Tetsuo Yabusame, saves the autonomous bomb Yukio and becomes an unlikely defender of Earth. Ten years later, now hailed as a “savior”, Tetsuo heads into space with Yukio for the Final Battle. With 20,000 kaiju closing in, humanity’s fate is on the line to bring an end to this relentless conflict!
Our Take:
In the far flung future of 2025, kaiju begin to attack Earth. I understand that the manga for this was written back in 2019. Even still, 2025 would only be six years into the future and I think the author is kidding themself if they thought that we were going to have giant robots. But honestly the biggest thing they got wrong is somehow thinking that the human race could come together for anything. I’m skeptical that being invaded by aliens would do the trick either but maybe that’s what we need.
What fascinates me about this show is that it feels like Komi Can’t Communicate but with mechs and monsters. The main character, Tetsuo Yabusame, is very shy and has a hard time having normal conversations with people. After the mission to destroy the kaiju fails, he makes a vow to his robot friend that he will make one hundred friends as he escapes to Earth. The only problem is that something has happened to the Earth and it’s now covered in snow. Are there any humans left to be friends with?
There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
