English Dub Review: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End “A Beautiful Sight”

Overview:

Hidden within the massive bridge spanning the Great Canyon Tor is a secret story of Himmel and Gehen.

Our Take:

I don’t think anyone can understand how sad I am that we’re only getting ten episodes of Frieren in the second season. There’s something about this show that’s so enjoyable and stress-free. That’s weird to say, given the fact that a fair few of the episodes involve fighting monsters and demons.

Animators having better working conditions is something that I’m sure everyone can get behind, but it feels like there has to be a middle ground somewhere. The first season of Frieren came out almost three years ago, and ten episodes is all we get? Yes, a third season has been announced already, but that will be October of next year. I’m just hoping it’s longer because we got teased for a pretty big arc coming up.

The snippets of backstory we get involving Himmel are always great, but sometimes I worry that boy was too good. When Frieren and the group come across a canyon that is impossible to fly over, she wonders if a project has been completed. When she was traveling with Himmel, they came across a dwarf who was trying to build a bridge across the canyon because if there had been a bridge before, then his village might still exist.

Gehen is the name of the bridge builder, and he’s run out of funds for his project. Himmel offers to pay for it, but Gehen can’t understand why, after all, humans have such a short lifespan that Himmel won’t be alive to see the fruits of his investment. Himmel wants to do a good thing, but he says that Frieren can enjoy the bridge, and that will be enough for him. Gehen even managed to rebuild his village, so Himmel’s good deed had massive ripple effects for the region.
