Stranger Comics unveils a first look at the highly anticipated Niobe anime series
The world of Asunda is officially making the jump to the screen as Stranger Comics unveils a first look at the highly anticipated Niobe anime series. Produced in collaboration with Mollo Animation, the project marks a major milestone for the fan-favorite franchise, bringing the complex, high-fantasy world of Niobe Atuyami to life through a vibrant, global lens.
A Breakthrough for Black Fantasy in Animation
Niobe, the “half-human, half-elf, part-angel, and part-demon” warrior, has long been a trailblazer in the comic book world for representation. The transition to anime feels like a natural evolution for a character whose story is defined by intense action, elemental magic, and epic world-building.
The series is being spearheaded by a creative trio of directors: Marthinus Van Rooyen, Lola Aikins, and Niobe’s creator, Sebastian A. Jones. By partnering with South African-based Mollo Animation, Jones is ensuring the series maintains an authentic, diverse perspective that reflects the global fan base Niobe has cultivated over the last decade.
Visuals and Direction
The first-look “sizzle” reel, which debuted during the StrangerCon event on March 21, showcases a visual style that blends traditional anime aesthetics with the lush, gritty atmosphere of the Asunda comics.
Key details regarding the production include:
-
Cultural Authenticity: Jones specifically sought out South African voices and animators to ground the series in a unique visual language.
-
Expanding the Lore: While the comics focused on Niobe’s growth in She is Life and She is Death, the anime is expected to explore the broader, “unruly” magical landscape of Asunda, featuring the visceral combat and high-stakes supernatural politics the series is known for.
-
Multi-Format Heroine: The anime is part of a larger push for the character, existing alongside a live-action film currently in development with Viola Davis’s JuVee Productions.
Where to Watch the Reveal
The official trailer for the Niobe anime was released as the centerpiece of a 12 PM PST block during the StrangerCon livestream. The footage highlights Niobe’s combat prowess and the “pink crystal goop” magical elements that drive the world’s conflict.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
