English Dub Review: A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans “The Misanthrope and the Magic for Peace and Quiet”

Overview:

Rei meets Neneko’s guardian, a powerful witch, and learns the true reason Neneko seeks to be human.

Our Take:

This episode was refreshing in a multitude of ways. Sure, we still had the dragon girl hitting on Rei the whole time, but something tells me that’s going to be how she is. What I was worried about was that everyone going on a summer trip to camp out that, there would be more uncomfortable things to deal with,, but luckily the camp out didn’t last long and was ultimately pretty wholesome. When we got back to school was when we got one of the better episodes of this series, I feel.

Neneko is one of the new girls in the glass (are there no male demi-humans who want to be human?), and as you might have guessed, she’s a cat. Not only is she a cat, but she is a witch’s cat. It’s for the witch that she wants to become human, or well, it’s more correct to say that the witch wants her to become human. But what about Neneko? What does she want? It turns out she wants to be with the witch and that’s all she needs in life. So she chooses to dropout and live her life as a cat.

You might be wondering why I think this is refreshing and enjoyable? Well it’s because I liked seeing a character fight for their own agency. Rei inspired her to fight for what she wants and the fact that she does that and stands up for herself was awesome to me. We’ve had two students leave the class in very different ways and I like getting to see both ways that can happen. That was one of the main reasons that Tobari created the school was to teach demi-humans how to be human and what’s more human than standing up for yourself?
