English Dub Review: MF Ghost “Into the Final Lap”

“The Gutter Technique”

Overview

Kanata’s comeback continues, and finally brings him into conflict with the top three racers.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, MF Ghost finds itself fully locked into high gear, delivering an episode that thrives on momentum, tension, and the uncertainty of how the race will ultimately resolve. The narrative leans heavily into escalation rather than closure, with positions constantly in flux and pressure mounting from all sides. While the title and episode framing tease developments beyond the track, the core appeal here remains the sense that the race has entered its most volatile phase, where every decision feels decisive, and no outcome is guaranteed.

Much of the episode’s impact comes from its reliance on familiar techniques and callbacks that longtime fans will instantly recognize. These moments add a layer of nostalgic excitement and reinforce the protagonist’s growth, even as tire wear, spacing, and positioning introduce believable limits to how far raw aggression can carry him. That said, the pacing continues to be a point of contention, as frequent perspective shifts and side elements occasionally dilute the tension at the front of the pack.

Overall, this episode was a mixed but engaging entry that succeeds most when it leans into adrenaline, legacy, and sustained pressure rather than spectacle alone. It delivers several standout moments that rekindle the spirit of classic street racing anime, even if uneven pacing, restrained musical impact, and tonal distractions prevent it from reaching its full potential. Still, with the finish line in sight, the stage is clearly set for a finale that could either justify the long buildup or leave the debate wide open once the dust finally settles.
