English Dub Review: An Adventurer’s Daily Grind at Age 29 “What’s Hatching”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Will Rirui’s egg hatch before Hajime turns it into breakfast?

Our Take:
Back in the third episode, Hajime and Rirui bought a mysterious egg said to bring good luck, only to run into Anyango afterwards.  However, that egg wasn’t the main focus of that episode, nor the one involving a Medusa-like Dungeon Destroyer.  It wasn’t until this week’s episode that the egg brought back our attention.  However, based on its premise, this particular egg is anything but good luck, as it hatched a Sparrow-flier, which Rirui named Dragon.  I think we all know where this is going based on that description, folks.
Right when the Sparrow-flier hatched, I knew how this familiar narrative would play out.  They find an egg that hatched an animal, are forced to take care of that said creature, and quickly discover the hard way that it’s not an easy task.  Fortunately for Hajime and Rirui, Dragon has proven to be a reliable member in the duo’s search for the Rabbit-bear and helping Natalie with her chores….sort of.  Besides that, the journey of caring for this strange creature offers plenty of familiar narrative beats that are far from unique.  It isn’t without its humor, which carries most of its similar elements, including Hajime’s dark flashback involving his pet dog from years ago.  However, it also further shows how twisted his mind works when it comes to eating animals, especially Dragon.  Even with his generosity towards others, Hajime continues to become a specific adventurer whose questionable actions and treatment of Rirui blur the line between humorous and annoying.
