English Dub Review: Gnosia “Nostalgic Flowers”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Yuri meets two more crewmembers, the dubious Jonas and mute Kukrushka, and enters a ship with every previous crewmate, three among them being Gnosia.

OUR TAKE

Oh hey, so nice of Gnosia to upload its episode a whole day late! I thought it would take the week off inexplicably like Let’s Play and Watari-Kun, two other shows I cover that for some reason haven’t released a new dub episodes. One may say it’s because the terrible change Crunchyroll made over to a different subtitle system that would make all of their show distribution worse across the board for…I assume a lower cost? Or maybe it costs more, which explains why they’re getting rid of their free option. But enough ranting about Crunchyroll…for the moment, as there is a new Gnosia to discuss, this time involving every previous character introduced thus far, as well as two new ones, and three Gnosia among them to weed out and eliminate. And if that wasn’t enough to juggle, Yuri is tasked with another new job: Guardian Angel, which grants one of the crew protection from an attack by a Gnosia during warp, when normally every human would be vulnerable. And it’s easy enough for them to point out the first two Gnosia, as Comet and Shigemichi claim the spots as Engineer and Doctor, but it is soon made clear that Kukrushka and Yuriko are in fact the real ones.

While this episode does let every current character get a bit in the spotlight, including the newer ones like Jonas who may or may not be the captain of the ship they’re on, it mainly serves the purpose of showing Yuri that even if they have just about all the answers and tools to weed out the Gnosia, they can let it all fall apart if they tip their hand too soon. Even though they were able to save Kukrushka as the Guardian Angel, telling her later tips off Rachio, the third and undetected Gnosia, who later claims the title themselves and turns the room against Yuri. I think this may be the first time Yuri is put into cold sleep, and it’s a bitter pill to swallow, though it seems the Gnosia are eventually weeded out afterwards. So, once again, new timeline and new crewmate, this time a beluga whale in a space suit, and only two other crewmates in the credits that we haven’t met yet. Honestly, I think I should do a chart at the end of this season to see who got which treatment the most often.
