Review: Krapopolis “The Anniversary Present”

Overview

Shlub has to improvise a gift for Deliria after forgetting their anniversary; Tyrannis and Stupendous try to cheer up Hippocampus after a break-up.

Our Take

All of the Shlub and Deliria plots this season seem to pretty much be different kinds of parties and events and really if you’ve seen one of them this season you’ve seen them all. This week’s episode has a lot of those characteristics but also throws in a time travel bit which is ironic because Rick Sanchez (the OG one voices by the show’s creator Justin Roiland) always touted time travel as both cliche and an amateur pursuit. Moreover, Krapopolis pretty much skips past the reset of time travel stories in Avengers: Endgame where just because you go to the past and change something, doesn’t necessarily mean that any changes will come when you go back…TO THE FUTURE! Instead, we get the tried and true formulaic take on time travel that, yes, Rick nails right on the head in terms of what we’re getting here.

Hippo’s breakup with Daphne would be interesting if it weren’t for the fact that we only see Daphne about once per season which really doesn’t help make the breakup all that compelling. Had the producers maybe gone this route in continuing Ty’s chase for love that we’ve been following this season I think I would’ve liked this idea a bit more, but instead, we kind of waste it on seldom used characters.

Overall, a cliched week of Krapopolis topped off by a lame montages that probably would’ve helped up the score a bit because that actually looked pretty entertaining. Instead, Krapopolis finishes the month with a mid episode that probably had a lot more promise than what was delivered.
