English Dub Review: Goodbye, Lara “True Love”

Overview:

Lara feels the pressure to find true love as the witch’s magic is running out. Is Luca the one?

Our Take:

I’m starting to think that Luca is supposed to be a false love as Lara learns what true love is. That’s not to say that Luca is a bad guy; I think he does have feelings for Lara, but I don’t think Lara loves him. Not in the way she wishes she did, I mean. It seems that Lara thinks that she HAS to fall in love with Luca because of a time crunch and his resemblance to the prince she fell in love with before.

Yoshiya is related to Mari; he’s either her brother or cousin, I’m not sure. He has a thing for Lara because every time Luca gets mentioned or she potentially has a boyfriend, he freaks out. When it comes to storytelling, I don’t think you would show something like this if you’re not intending to make it a part of the narrative. I don’t even necessarily think that he’s her true love, but I think that we’re going to see something from that at some point.

I can see this story going one of a few ways. I don’t see Luca as Lara’s true love; could it be Yoshiya? Sure, but I don’t know if that will even be the case. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mari ends up being Lara’s “true love” either. Even that could go two ways; it could be a yuri situation, or perhaps the moral of this story ends up being something about true love not necessarily being romantic.

Before any of that can happen, we have to get to the end first, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a little confused. I like how, so far, there hasn’t been a villain in a traditional sense. Even the “evil witch” Grace seems to want to help Lara. She started to seem a little more like a villain in this episode, I suppose, but even then it seemed like something bad was happening to her. Hell, in some ways, Lara seems like the villain. That giant stone fish in the sky seems to respond to her whenever she’s upset. It almost ate poor Luca until Lara pushed him out of the way.

What I’m trying to say in a poor way is that I think there’s more to this show than what we’ve been shown. I’m expecting some sort of twist that will flip this show on its head. I’m also hoping that happens because, as it stands right now, it feels incredibly disjointed with no clear direction.
