Fox Cancels Beloved Animated Comedy ‘The Great North’ After Five Seasons

Fox has officially announced the cancellation of the critically praised adult animated series The Great North after five seasons. The news arrives just weeks after the show wrapped its fifth season run on the network, confirming what many fans and insiders had feared following the network’s recent large-scale animation commitments.

The series, which focused on the quirky Tobin family living in the fictional town of Lone Moose, Alaska, premiered in 2021 and quickly became a wholesome fixture of Fox’s renowned Animation Domination lineup.

The Great North was created and written by Wendy Molyneux, Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, and Minty Lewis, with Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard serving as an executive producer. It shared creative DNA with Bob’s Burgers—which the Molyneux sisters also wrote for—bringing a gentler, more family-focused humor to the adult animation block.

The show boasted an impressive voice cast, including Nick Offerman as single dad Beef Tobin, Jenny Slate as his aspiring artist daughter Judy, Will Forte as older brother Wolf, and Dulcé Sloan as Wolf’s wife Honeybee. A recurring highlight was Alanis Morissette, who voiced an imaginary version of herself appearing to Judy in the Northern Lights.

The final episode of Season 5, which aired in mid-September, will now serve as the series finale.

The cancellation was not entirely unexpected. Fox had previously made massive, multi-season renewal commitments to its tentpole animated shows, including The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, and the returning American Dad! This left limited space on the Sunday night schedule.

In a statement regarding the difficult decision, Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn expressed gratitude for the show’s run: “We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North… it’s difficult to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons The Great North brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.”

While ratings were stable, they were generally lower than the network’s long-running hits, and the show was noticeably absent from Fox’s publicly announced 2025-2026 slate earlier this year.

The cancellation marks the end of a unique and acclaimed series, though fans are already holding out hope that, like other beloved animated shows of the past, The Great North might find new life on a streaming platform.
