English Dub Review: The Rising of the Shield Hero “Return of the Emperor”
Overview
The Emperor’s Ghost challenges Raphtalia to a one-on-one duel to prove her worthiness.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, the Season 4 finale closes out the latest arc with a mix of highs and lows, continuing the series’ tendency to divide opinion. While Naofumi remains at the center of the story, much of the focus shifts toward Raphtalia, whose growth and responsibilities are highlighted in meaningful ways. Motoyasu also makes an impression, maintaining his unpredictable energy, while the larger cast faces challenges that hint at even bigger conflicts on the horizon.
Visually, the production delivers some memorable action moments, with Raphtalia’s duel standing out as one of the more polished highlights of the season. The finale also teases what lies ahead, giving glimpses of new threats and emotional stakes without fully revealing where the narrative will go next. Combined with the environmental designs and dramatic musical cues, it manages to maintain momentum even when pacing and execution feel uneven.
Overall, Season 4 serves as both a conclusion to its current arc and a bridge toward the next, with Naofumi, Raphtalia, and their allies continuing to provide the emotional core. While the season delivers enough development and spectacle to keep viewers engaged, it struggles with pacing issues and never quite reaches the heights of its acclaimed first season. Still, the finale leaves audiences curious, and with Season 5 confirmed at the end credits, I remain hopeful for a return to the sharper storytelling previous seasons had somewhere down the line…

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
