English Dub Review: Tales of Wedding Rings “Episode 14”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Satou and the Princesses enter the Elves’ Great Library and learn more of the truth about the first Ring King.

Our Take:
Satou’s second quest is officially underway, with the first destination being the Elves’ Great Library, where they decipher more of the world’s history, including the Abyss King.  Notably, the episode solely focuses on the origin story of the first Ring King, who’s revealed to be an ordinary farmer who discovered the Light Ring in his field.  Initially valiant, the farmer’s personality significantly changed due to his never-ending war against the Abyss Demons, leaving him dangerously obsessed with power and sex.  As a result, the previous Ring Maidens, including Peridot, severed his ring hand and killed him.  However, it also left them under his curse, which binds their descendants to the future Ring King, who happens to be Satou.
The episode showcased more of the show’s world-building through the first Ring King’s descent into madness.  More importantly, it emphasizes Satou’s struggles regarding his responsibility as the new Ring King.  In addition to having to fulfill his destiny while devoting himself to Hime, Satou will now have to deal with avoiding the same mistake the first Ring King made years ago.  Essentially, the fourteenth episode further establishes the show’s depiction of legacy and the resistance to repeating history, which is enough to pique interest in the protagonist’s journey amid the show’s formulaic narrative.  With Satou preparing to gain more power by having sex, we can also expect more intimate pleasures heading our way amid this struggle.  However, given Satou’s concerns, performing sex with all the wives may prove to be more challenging than avoiding corruption.
