OUR TAKE
After twelve mewing episodes, we have reached the end of this first, and possibly only, season of Nyaight of the Living Cat, which pretty much entirely focuses on resolving the battle that began last week. Still more soldiers are turned into cats, the larger animals being controlled by cats are closing in, and all seems lost, UNTIL Grandma makes a risky play: She’ll turn herself into a cat in order to talk the other cats into leaving. While this does ultimately cost her own humanity, it does give her a chance to actually verbally communicate with the pack. And probably to no one’s surprise, none of the cats are in any way malicious or bloodthirsty or really anything negative. They’re just looking for people to play with, unaware of the damage they’re causing. One would then question why they feel the need to take control of larger animals, invade strongholds, and turn even more humans into cats that can only do so much, but…they’re also just cats, so their intelligence and awareness may just be that limited, unlike Jones. By that same token, you could also question Grandma why she didn’t use her limited window of being both human and able to speak to all cats as a way of relaying some crucial information of what the cats are thinking as they continue to take over the entire world but…yeah, I don’t really have any defense for this, that was kind of a waste of a gamble there, Grandma.
However, that’s not all the episode has to offer, as Kunagi awakens from his healing coma after having a dream of his mysterious past, apparently taking place in a lab full of scientists who love cats, and being left that bell toy that was taken from him last episode. We’ve known the entire time that there was most definitely something weird and off about Kunagi, and this doesn’t fill in a whole lot, but it does at least provide SOME further context for that, which I’m sure will be further explored, along with this enigmatic “Project Living Cat” that is happening behind the scenes. Looks like a potential second season will involve Kunagi, Kaoru, and Tsutsumu travelling further to find more out about this strange facility Kunagi came from, but it looks like the possibility of that happening is currently up in the air. This season ended strong, and I’m eager to see it continue in anime form, so let’s hope that this show, like a cat, lands on its feet.
