English Dub Review: Cat’s Eye “Gentleman Thief Is Here!”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Kamiya, a jewel thief, becomes intrigued by Hitomi and uses a bet with Ai to get close to her.

Our Take:

The Cat’s Eye had made another clean getaway while maintaining their cover from their new opponent, Detective Asatani.  However, it turns out that she’s not the only person they need to watch out for, as another thief has arrived to take over the competition.  This week’s episode started with yet another robbery sequence as seen in the previous episodes, but it’s not the Cat’s Eye that performed this particular heist.  Instead, it was Masato Kamiya, a charismatic yet cunning “mouse” who takes a vast interest in jewelry.  That is, until he decided to compete with Cat’s Eye to steal the “Woman After a Bath” painting as part of a bet with Ai, prompting them in a literal cat-and-mouse game.

Based on my research, Masato Kamiya may have been a character made exclusive to the latest iteration of Cat’s Eye, because again, this is my first exposure to the franchise.  If that’s the case, then this gentlemanly thief has made a solid first impression for the action-crime anime.  Obviously, Kamiya has taken the prime traits of other charming thieves like Flynn Rider from “Tangled” and Mr. Wolf from “The Bad Guys”, but those traits are what made these characters so beloved despite their criminal records.  It’s hard to say whether Kamiya would make it onto that list since his future in the series has yet to be written.  However, regarding his first appearance in this entertaining cat-and-mouse competition, I will say that he’s definitely another thief worth watching out for.
