English Dub Review: To Be Hero X “Lie”

Overview:

Ahu grew up in the circus and doesn’t like children, but everything changes when he meets Xin Ya.

Our Take (Spoilers):

I put a spoiler warning because I wanted people to know that Ahu the dog is okay. He got the shit beat out of him for most of the episode, but he awakened to his hero powers in one of the most hype scenes in the series so far. Most bad guys think they’re doing the right thing, but if you find yourself beating the crap out of a defenseless animal, you might be a piece of shit, sorry.

We got a new animation style for our one episode following Ahu, and it was pretty cool. It reminded me a lot of some of the Cartoon Network shows you’d find on that channel in the early 2000s. I wasn’t personally a fan of shows like that, but I thought it worked really well here.

What really made the episode work was the relationship between Ahu and Xin Ya. She wanted him to be her pet so she could protect her neighborhood after seeing him in the circus. Ahu’s inner thoughts are voiced by Christopher Sabat, who is an anime legend, so that’s another key factor.

We are finally caught up with the Nice side of things. When you get beaten out for being in the top ten by a dog, I might think about killing myself, too. Don’t feel bad for him, though, because he was the leader of the bad guys who were beating up Ahu. They were after the deeds to properties that poor people in Xin Ya’s neighborhood were forced to give up.
