English Dub Review: Flower and Asura “Friends and Family”

Overview:

A wedding invitation, a surprising discovery, and an unexpected complication threaten to derail the Broadcasting Club’s hard work just before the preliminaries.

Our Take(Spoilers):

This episode was difficult to review. We learned that Mizuki’s grandmother owns a prominent company, and she has an older brother who seems to get preferential treatment from her grandmother. Bad family members are nothing new to anime watchers, but Mizuki’s grandmother was mean. When Mizuki was little, she drew a picture and she made her get out of her sight. If I were Mizuki, I wouldn’t have wanted to be in that family either. Her brother is getting married soon, and it happens to be on the day of her competition, so she visited her family to let them know she wouldn’t make it. This led to her being locked in a room, and now her friends in the broadcast club are trying to get her out.

One thing that boggled my mind was the look we got into Mizuki’s past. For one, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that she’s not actually blonde, but she was also doing her best at being a delinquent. She used to have long hair and a long skirt too. I know the long skirt is shown in the media as a way to portray a girl as a delinquent, but it felt out of place. It felt like Mizuki was cosplaying as a schoolgirl from the 50s more than anything.
