English Dub Review: Cat’s Eye “Cat’s Eye is Here!”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The Cat’s Eye sisters, Hitomi, Rui, and Ai, outwit Detective Toshio to steal the “Roman Woman”.

Our Take:

Maintaining the current tradition of anime adaptations, we have ourselves another redo of a popular manga series that’s been stealing audiences’ hearts since the 1980s.  The one I’m referring to was Tsukasa Hojo’s Cat’s Eye, an action-mystery series chronicling the adventures of three cafe-running sisters who secretly act as art thieves.  Hitomi Kisugi is the highly skilled and athletic operative of the team.  Rui Kisugi is the group’s leader and strategist, and Ai Kisugi is the youngest of the trio with a tomboyish flair.  Speaking as someone who has just heard of the series, Cat’s Eye seemed to have been one of the starting points of female-empowering media involving a trio of women leading double lives.  If not for its existence, we might not have had projects like Totally Spies and even Kpop Demon Hunters entering our lives.

Given my enjoyment of these similar media, Cat’s Eye may have been right up my alley, but the true test is whether its execution and story could maintain my attention.  Based on the first episode, I think it may have a chance, especially in terms of its animation and entertaining scenarios.  If you’re familiar with the previous adaptations of Cat’s Eye, “Cat’s Eye is Here!” delivers exactly what you’ll expect from its premise, mainly the friendly rivalry between the sisters and Detective Toshio, who’s unaware of their true identities.  Its structure was a tad repetitive, with the sisters stealing the priceless paintings and the Indian Dynasty crown.  Nonetheless, it shows potential of being another successful reimagining of an iconic manga if it can maintain its strategy to complete this heist.
