D’OH! The Simpsons Movie 2 Gets a Release Date, Swapping Places with Marvel

Springfield is officially coming back to the big screen! After years of rumors and fan pleading, Disney’s 20th Century Studios has confirmed that a sequel to 2007’s smash hit, The Simpsons Movie, is in development and has a confirmed theatrical release date.

Get ready to clear your calendars for:

July 23, 2027

The announcement was made with a celebratory social media post featuring Homer’s favorite pink donut, adorned with sprinkles shaped like the number two, and the perfect tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

In a move that has studios buzzing, The Simpsons Movie 2 has taken over the July 2027 slot previously held by an untitled Marvel Studios film.

This means that the sequel is currently set to drop right in the middle of a significant break in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) schedule, which currently features no new releases between Avengers: Doomsday (December 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 17, 2027). The yellow family will now be responsible for filling that summer blockbuster void!

The first Simpsons Movie grossed over $536 million worldwide, proving the enduring popularity of Matt Groening’s creation. With the series enjoying a resurgence in popularity thanks to its entire library being available on Disney+, the timing is perfect for the family from Springfield to make their highly anticipated cinematic comeback. Woohoo!

The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, The Simpsons exploded into a cultural phenomenon in 1990 and has remained one of the most groundbreaking and innovative entertainment franchises, recognizable throughout the world. The Emmy Award-, Annie Award- and Peabody Award-winning animated comedy has won 37 Emmy Awards.

The Simpsons is a Gracie Films Production in association with 20th Television. James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Matt Selman, and Al Jean are the executive producers. The Gracie Films Worldwide Brand Division develops and produces the licensed content for the series.
