English Dub Review: Lord of Mysteries “The Notebook”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Klein is recruited to help find a magic Notebook

OUR TAKE

We’re still at the point in the story where Klein, or rather the guy who has now assumed the role of Klein, is still getting used to his new surroundings and occupation. This episode is pretty much just him getting a crash course in collecting ancient powerful artifacts and getting to see much more powerful Beyonders who he can aspire to get as powerful as. That’s a pretty simply premise and plot when you get right down to it, but you would be forgiven if you thought things were more complicated since the episode is basically seeped in the show’s AGGRESIVELY complicated lore. I’m trying to not be reductive or dismissive about it, but all these mentions of epochs and pathways and sequences gets incredibly tiresome to keep track of when all you really need to keep track of is that this guy threw some magic at a monster. And don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of stories with really overdeveloped lore like Star Trek, Evangelion, and DC comics. I would be lying if I didn’t get the appeal of learning a bunch of weird lore. I just don’t quite get the appeal of THIS SPECIFIC weird lore, you feel me?

As for this episode on its own, it’s also not as simple as just grabbing an artifact and fighting a monster. Klein and his colleagues are also on the hunt for a Secret Order, and Klein in particular uses his burgeoning but immense powers to confront one of its agents, and clown faced man named…Clown? I think? Because of course what this show was missing were a bunch of multi-faceted factions with unclear goals and motives. But hey, at least this is kind of something my brain can latch onto in terms of plot progression. As well as the fact that Klein is proving himself quite useful in his own faction, the Nighthawks. No word on what’s happening with those two other Tarot named people he met in the first episode, but I’m sure they’ll make a meaningful appearance down the line. But man, this show is just…a whole lot in a very short amount of time. And I imagine it’s only going to get more a lot pretty fast, but I’ll try to filter out what I need to keep up with the actual plot that’s going on. And damn, if I thought Warhammer got complicated fast, that’s nothing compared to this.
