Season Review: Digman! Season Two
Comedy Central’s Digman! transports viewers to a world where archaeologists are not dusty academics, but rather, massive celebrities and the coolest people on the planet. The series centers on Rip Digman, voiced by Andy Samberg, a retired adventurer haunted by the death of his wife, Bella (Melissa Fumero). Alongside his overachieving student Saltine (Mitra Jouhari) and their pilot Swooper(Tim Robinson), Rip attempts to make a comeback in the world of archaeology, seeking legendary artifacts and trying to regain his former glory.
The premise is undoubtedly unique, and the involvement of Andy Samberg, known for his comedic timing and delivery, immediately sets an expectation for a joke-dense, high-concept comedy. However on first watch of the show’s second season, while some of the initial episodes were promising and delightful featuring strong writing and stellar voice performances, the series as a whole misses the mark in essentially every department with jokes falling flat and an over-reliance on tired comedic elements that have been done time and time again on different animated sitcoms.
Visually, Digman! adopts a style that is aesthetically pleasing similar to other adult animated comedies, but not necessarily appealing, functional in serving the comedy rather than being a standout feature itself.
The characters in Digman! are generally more likable and easier to root for compared to the often self-interested characters in similar adult animated shows like say Rick and Morty. While still flawed, Rip and his supporting cast present lower-stakes problems that should resonate more with a Family Guy-esque audience.
If you’re a fan of Andy Samberg’s comedic style and enjoy offbeat animated adventures, Digman! might just unearth some laughs for you, however casual viewers should be prepared for a potentially uneven comedic experience that might not land with everyone.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
