Review: Grimsburg “Across the Flutiverse”

Overview

An interdimensional rift appears in Grimsburg and through it emerges the Multi-Flutes, an elite squad of Flutes from different dimensions

Our Take

“Across the Multiverse” sees Marvin being visited by different versions of himself from other realities while the rest of the Grimsburg PD gets transported into another dimension where the cast lives in a multi-camera primetime sitcom. In typical Grimsburg fashion, the producers have arrived at the multiversal parodies in completely last place and the results are mixed to low in their execution.

Marvin being visited by multiple versions of himself is your paint-by-colors multiverse effort that you’ve probably seen over a dozen times before and you’re not getting anything too different here. Some of the ideas for the different takes on Marvin are cute for about a minute, but again pretty standard. The rest of the cast being transported into another reality is even more disappointing because the bit largely features dialogue that would only be funny to people who work in show business and probably would go over the head of most casual viewers who don’t care to differentiate the difference between what a multi-camera or a single-camera comedy is.

Marvin’s multiversal adventure is the slightly more funny of the two stories tonight, but not by much. None of this week’s episode features anything ambitious like previous multiversal efforts from the likes of Family Guy but there’s an occasional laugh that shows up here or there. Other than that, the FOX original series ends it’s second season a lot like a Marvel Phase 4 multiversal effort rather than anything done via Sony Pictures Animation.
